Workplace burnout isn’t just about feeling tired. It’s a state of emotional, mental and sometimes physical exhaustion, often caused by prolonged stress and constant pressure. It can leave people feeling overwhelmed, emotionally drained and unable to keep up with the demands placed on them.
And while burnout can affect anyone, it’s especially common among senior leaders, business owners, entrepreneurs, and executives who carry significant responsibility.
Because when you’re the person making the decisions, holding the vision, managing the team, serving the clients and keeping the business moving, the pressure can build quietly.
Until it no longer feels quiet.
Burnout doesn’t always arrive as a dramatic collapse. Sometimes it looks like irritability, poor sleep, lack of motivation, slower decision-making, missed opportunities, low energy, reduced creativity or the constant feeling that you’re behind, no matter how much you do.
And that matters.
Because burnout isn’t only a well-being issue, it’s a business issue too.
When leaders are burnt out, decisions take longer. Communication suffers. Opportunities get missed. Teams become less confident. Clients may notice delays or inconsistencies. Standards can slip, not because people don’t care, but because they’ve been stretched too thin for too long.
So the real question isn’t simply, ‘How do we avoid burnout?’ It’s, ‘How do we build the right support around leaders so they can perform well without carrying everything alone?’
Having worked with a number of businesses and running a business myself, I speak from experience when I say it is possible to avoid burnout in the workplace. Here are five ways to manage stress, protect your energy and stay on top of your workload before burnout becomes part of the business culture.
Find harmony in your work
Work-life balance is important, but finding harmony in your work is often underestimated.
When your work feels meaningful, well-supported and aligned with what matters most, it has a positive impact on your energy and focus. But when your role is filled with constant firefighting, too many low-value tasks and never-ending demands, even work you love can start to feel heavy.
You’re more likely to experience burnout working five hours a day in a role that drains you than ten hours a day doing something that feels worthwhile and properly supported.
Start by making a list of everything you enjoy about your work or business. What gives you energy? What uses your strengths? What feels valuable?
Then make a second list of the tasks that drain your time, attention and capacity.
This is where the truth often shows up.
Many senior leaders are spending too much time in the wrong areas. They’re managing diaries, chasing replies, organising documents, booking travel, handling admin, following up on actions, and sorting out operational details that someone else could manage for them.
These tasks may be necessary, but they don’t always need your personal attention.
And when your time is taken up with work that pulls you away from leadership, strategy and client relationships, the cost is higher than a busy diary.
It affects the whole business.
Build a great team
Businesses and people thrive when they have the right support around them.
A strong team brings different skills, perspectives and strengths. It also helps prevent one person from becoming the bottleneck for every decision, task and follow-up.
For executives and business owners, this is especially important.
When everything depends on you, your capacity becomes the ceiling for the business. If you’re tired, overwhelmed, or constantly distracted, progress slows, and projects stall. Decisions get delayed. Opportunities are missed because there simply isn’t enough space to think clearly.
This is where strategic Executive Assistant support can make a significant difference.
At Executive PA Solutions, we support clients by providing experienced, professional and proactive personal assistants who help improve workplace efficiency, flexibility and time management.
But this isn’t just about getting an extra pair of hands.
The right EA becomes a trusted part of the team. They help protect your time, organise the details, manage priorities and reduce the daily pressure that can so easily lead to burnout.
Here’s what one longstanding client had to say:
“We wanted to find a new way of working. The processes weren’t as efficient as they could be, and it wasn’t a sustainable approach. It was putting a real strain on all of us.
Sandy felt experienced virtual PA Claire would be a good fit for the NRT team.
Claire has now been supporting myself and the Board with day-to-day administrative activities since 2023. This has enabled me to free up my time and focus on the strategic elements of my role.We appreciate having someone there who’s anticipating what’s coming up and what needs to be done. We’re much better prepared for Board meetings, my inbox and calendar are being managed, presentations are well prepared and systems and processes have been put in place to ensure growth is sustainable – Claire has taken a significant role in implementing the necessary governance systems to achieve this.
I always used to find myself being pulled into administrative matters that would take away my focus. Because Claire now handles all those things, I’m able to be more visible within the organisation.”

That’s the value of the right support.
It creates space.
And space helps people do better work.
Prioritise your time
It’s easy to get carried away when writing a to-do list.
Every task can feel important. Every request can feel urgent. Every notification can pull your attention away from what you were meant to be doing.
But when everything’s treated as urgent, nothing is truly prioritised.
This is one of the fastest routes to burnout, especially for leaders.
You spend your day reacting. You answer the email. You jump on the call. You deal with the immediate problem. You clear the small tasks because they feel easier to complete.
Then the bigger, more strategic work gets pushed back again.
Try numbering the tasks on your list in order of importance. Focus first on the work that genuinely moves the business forward. Aim to complete five key tasks each day and treat anything else as a bonus.
This helps create a sense of progress without expecting yourself to complete an unrealistic list.
Also, pay attention to the tasks that keep sitting at the bottom of your list. If something’s been there for more than a week, ask yourself why.
Does it need doing?
Does it need delegating?
Does it need deleting?
Or are you avoiding it because it feels unclear, awkward or too time-consuming?
An experienced EA can help with this process. They can spot patterns, organise priorities and take ownership of the tasks that don’t need to sit with you.
Because better time management isn’t just about doing more – it’s about deciding what deserves your attention.
Move your body
Burnout directly affects your energy levels, so the idea of exercise can feel unappealing.
But movement doesn’t need to be complicated.
Even a ten-minute walk can help clear your head, boost your mood and give your nervous system a chance to reset.
For busy executives, this can be especially helpful between meetings or after intense decision-making periods. A short walk, a stretch away from the desk, or simply getting outside for fresh air can help you return with more clarity.
This isn’t about adding another pressure to your day. It’s about building small, realistic habits that support your wellbeing.
Because your ability to lead well is directly connected to how well you’re looking after yourself.
Ramblers provides a website where you can explore walks in your local area. From short to longer walks for those who want to explore a little further, there is something for every ability.
Talk to others
Burnout can feel isolating, but it shouldn’t be carried alone.
Talking through your concerns with someone you trust can help relieve stress and bring perspective. This isn’t always about finding an immediate solution. Sometimes it’s simply about having space to say, ‘This is too much right now.’
For business leaders, this matters.
When you’re used to being the person others rely on, it can be difficult to admit when you’re struggling. But ignoring the pressure doesn’t make it disappear. It usually makes it worse.
You may benefit from visiting Mind, where you can learn about different types of talking therapy and counselling. Mental health problems are common at work, and although it can feel like a taboo subject, there are lots of simple things you can do that can help make your workplace mentally healthier. There are some great ideas shared on the Mental Health Foundation website.
If you have any concerns relating to addiction, then do visit the OK Rehab website. OK Rehab aims to help individuals break free from the shackles of addiction and find a treatment that’s ideally suited to their needs. This treatment is available via both inpatient and outpatient treatment providers.
There’s no need to suffer alone.
Burnout prevention is a business strategy
Burnout is often treated as a personal issue, but in business, it has wider consequences.
When leaders are overwhelmed, the business feels it.
When decisions are delayed, opportunities are lost. When communication becomes rushed or inconsistent, teams feel it. When the person at the top has no room to think, plan or recover, the whole organisation can become reactive.
That’s why prevention matters.
And prevention isn’t only about rest. It’s also about structure, delegation and support.
At Executive PA Solutions, we understand that senior leaders need more than basic admin help. They need proactive, professional support that reduces pressure, protects their time, and allows them to focus on what matters most.
Because when the right support is in place, leaders can breathe again. They can think more clearly, make better decisions and show up with the calm, professional presence their business needs.
And that’s not a luxury – it’s essential.
If burnout is starting to affect your productivity, decision-making or ability to focus on the work that matters most, Executive PA Solutions can help. Our experienced Executive Assistants can take care of the details, lighten the load and give you back the time and headspace you need to lead well.
