The one simple thing you can do to improve your management skills

by Jul 4, 2018Blog, Strategic Planning

The world, your role and the foundations within it are continually evolving and changing. Each change brings about new challenges, challenges that need new solutions to be found. As a manager and leader, if you want to easily adapt to these new challenges and changes, you also need to be evolving and changing. This is why Investing in your continued growth and continually striving to improve your management skills is so important for you, if you want to be a leader that leads from the front.

A good leader is one that is always growing and improving

Continued growth is the most important thing you can do, to improve your management skills. It not only gives you access to new skills and keeps you abreast of any changes in your existing ones, it also gives you the right mindset to understand that change is inevitable. In embracing this mindset shift, you can learn to thrive in your leadership role, instead of continually striving to keep up.

A good leader needs to learn how to adapt fast to situations and be sensitive to the changes around them. By coming from a mindset that change is inevitable, you’re more alert to signs of change around your industry. You’re more aware of the changing needs of your team and what adaptations are needed, to increase motivation and engagement.

Continued growth is important for your team too

If you understand the importance of continued growth for your management skills, you’ll also appreciate the importance of it for your team too. By creating a learning environment in your business, you’ll be illustrating how much you respect your team. A leader who values continued growth will understand how important it is for their employees to be constantly learning and evolving.

In Inc.com’s article ‘5 signs that instantly identify someone with bad leadership skills’, some of the top toxic management behaviours include treating people like numbers and not recognising good work. A learning environment encourages your team to grow, it also increases company loyalty, respect and motivation. Employees feel valued and appreciated – and this leads to a happier, more engaged and loyal team.

In learning better management skills you’re also learning how to communicate better with your team. Training magazine had a list of 10 great ways to improve your management skills – all of which revolve around being more self aware of your abilities, those of your team and the working environment generally – something continued growth enables you to appreciate.

Management skills aren’t a one-time-done learning experience

A true leader has humility. Management skills aren’t a one-time-done learning experience – not if you want to be a good manager. A humble manager understands that they don’t know everything. They understand they aren’t perfect, but are honest enough to acknowledge this.

The difference between a mediocre leader and a good leader is the ability to admit their imperfections and a willingness to learn from them. By showing that you’re willing to take ownership of your mistakes, shortcomings and limitations, you’re showing that you’re actively seeking to make yourself a better leader – and that’s something that people respect and can become loyal to.
